Although only one pharmaceutical or medical device maker has been prosecuted thus far for bribery in the conduct of clinical trials, companies are acutely aware that an industry-wide investigation is underway. (The U.S. Government’s settlements with Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer referred to corrupt payments falsely attributed to fees for clinical trials, but there was no allegation in either case that clinical trials actually served as a vehicle for improper payments.)
